In the 26th Space Simulation Conference to be held in October, John Mather gets big billing as the Luncheon Speaker. Here is a portion of the blurb that introduces Mather (click on ‘Keynote Speakers’ in menu on left):
Mather and Smoot analyzed data from NASA’s Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE), which studied the pattern of radiation from the first few instants after the universe was formed. The team also showed that the big bang radiation has a spectrum that agrees exactly with the theoretical prediction, confirming the Big Bang theory and showing that the Big Bang was complete in the first instants, with only a tiny fraction of the energy released later.
What this says – on the surface and in any interpretation – is that Smoot was an equal collaborator in discovering the fraudulent Big Bang Blackbody Spectrum.
The above language is actually copied from a NASA webpage put up in 2006 just after the Nobel Prize announcement. Although not true – the statements could be accepted then as resulting from great bonhomie and team spirit.
Today, recycling this public statement takes on a dark meaning. I wonder how George Smoot would feel knowing that the World is being told today that he had half the responsibility for the COBE Satellite fraud.
Here is the truth: George Smoot had little to do with the fraudulent part of the COBE results: the measurement of the spectrum which was Mather’s project. Not only that. Smoot and Mather were at loggerheads, and so the two had even less to do with each other’s project at the data reduction stage than would normally be the case in a scientific collaboration. The data reduction stage is where the fraud took place.
Based on information available in the public domain, it can be said that Smoot had no part in the commission of the fraud itself. However, it seems that a contrary impression is being created in the public mind.
