LIGO DISCOVERY: A silence of the wise

The observant person would have noticed that many active key figures in the mainstream physics establishment have withheld their comment on the LIGO discovery. This is a most wise thing to do. They will not end up with eggs on their faces.

To me, two most interesting opiners in such matters in the past have been Steven Weinberg and Edward Witten (both of whom I have profusely criticized.) My Google news search today turned up no comments from them. I have seen in the past that on such occasions their comments are highly sought after by the media. And of course gravitational waves are of direct interest to both.

My take: for too long people on the theory side have taken the word of the cosmology experimenters in implicit trust, and gone to bat for them vigorously. They got burned bad.
